“Tories cheered as they voted through cuts to frontline services and jobs” – Cllr Richard Giddings

In a letter to the local press, Cllr Richard Giddings, Liberal Democrat member for Lumbertubs, has attacked the Conservatives for cheering and clapping as they voted through £69m of cuts to services and 900 job losses.

The text of the letter is here:

“Conservative County Councillors clapped and cheered as they voted through £70 million programme of cuts at the County Council, but ‘their leaders tell the press it was the last thing they wanted to do’.

“Not one member of the Conservative group enjoys making the kind of decisions that are in front of us’ said the Tory Cabinet Member for Finance. Clearly he wasn’t listening to his own side. Tory Councillors applauded as they scrapped school crossing patrols, closed mobile libraries, axed grants to voluntary groups, cut road safety and fire protection, and cut bus services.

By the time the final vote was taken, most of the protestors had gone and the public gallery was empty. But there were a few left, including opposition councillors to hear Tory councillors applauded themselves as they destoyed 900 jobs and cut front line services. What a sad indictment of how seriously they take these decisions, and proof of the heartless, uncaring nature of our Tory County Councillors.
