Northamptonshire Liberal Democrats have welcomed the new Localism Act, which became law yesterday.
Leader of the Liberal Democrat Opposition on Northamptonshire County Council, Cllr Brendan Glynane, said “This is great news for local councils and communities across the country. Thanks to the Liberal Democrats in Government local people will have more power and opportunity to shape the communities in which they live than has been the case for many years.”
“For as long as I can remember much of what local councils have done has been severely restricted by central government – particularly under the last Labour Government. Now councils have been given a “general power of competence”, meaning they are free to do what they like in their areas as long as it is within the law.”
“Meanwhile communities have a whole new host of opportunities – rights to run community buildings and services and new powers to draw up neighbourhood plans. These are really radical changes that put power in the hands of local people instead of Whitehall beaurocrats. I am delighted that the Liberal Democrats are using their influence in Government to deliver real power to local people.”
