George Smid, King’s Cliffe campaigner and Chair of Corby Lib Dems, has written to Local Government minister Andrew Stunnell asking for help to implement the spirit of the Localism Bill.  “The Government must stop the dumping of radioactive waste at King’s Cliffe. The operator of the site was allowed to deposit radioactive waste only on Appeal to the Secretary of State after Northamptonshire County Council refused the Application”.

George further said “I really hope Andrew Stunnell will help. The Liberal Democrats believe strongly in localism, but Eric Pickles has over-ridden local objections on this. We need to push for the Government to listen to local people otherwise we lose all the credibility with our support for Localism Bill.”

The message about the local feeling could not have been clearer. Last Friday there was a peaceful demonstration against the dumping in which George took part. Six people were arrested, including George.

“I have written asking for the Minister’s support and for him to fight for us within the Government. The Government must match their rhetoric on localism with a real commitment to communities on the ground. Stopping plans to allow radioactive waste to be dumped on our doorstep would be a step in the right direction.”
