Research by the Liberal Democrats at Northamptonshire County Council has shown that the Conservative group claimed £59,439 in travel and subsistence expenses in 2010/11, with the Conservative Cabinet claiming a total of £27,812. In comparison the Liberal Democrat group and Shadow Cabinet claimed only £717 in total, with two thirds of the members not claiming any travel expenses at all.
Cllr Brendan Glynane, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Opposition, said “This is truly shocking. The Conservative Cabinet have racked up enough in travel expenses to employ 2 early years assistants working with children, or 2 day care assistants working with vulnerable adults, such as those suffering from dementia. At a time when local people are having street lights turned out, bus subsidies scrapped, lollipop men and ladies axed, services to the vulnerable cut back and funds for volunteers stopped, it is simply incredible.”
“For Conservative Councillors to believe that they can get away with claiming so much money from the hard pressed taxpayers of Northamptonshire, in light of the recent MPs expenses scandal is simply appalling.”
