“Your chance to have a say over street light switch off” – Cllr Chris Stanbra

The Liberal Democrats have put a motion on the next meeting of Northamptonshire County Council calling for the street light switch off to be scaled back.

Deputy Leader Chris Stanbra said “It’s clear that all the concerns that the Liberal Democrats had at budget time have come true. We suggested that cuts to street lights should be scaled back and that consultation should be real and meaningful. The Conservatives should have listened, because there is uproar now.”

“The Liberal Democrats are determined to give local residents a chance to have their say. That is why we have put a motion to the meeting of Council at County Hall on June 23rd at 10.30am. Any local resident can come and address the meeting on the subject. The deadline for registering to speak is 12 noon, Tuesday 21st June. If you wish to have your say and address all Councillors on this vital issue contact Democratic Services on 01604 237560.”

The motion on the Council Agenda reads as follows:

“This Council notes the outcry in Northamptonshire over the street lighting switch off.

This Council believes that switching off so many lights in built up areas could lead to problems of anti-social behaviour and to an increase in crime and the fear of crime.

This Council believes that the switch off should not have been implemented without proper consultation with local communities and businesses.

This Council believes that the Conservative administration should reverse its decision to switch off so many lights and that it should identify the back office savings needed to enable the council to scale back the programme so that street lights in built up areas can be switched on again.”
