The Deputy Leader and Finance Spokesman of the Liberal Democrat Opposition at County Hall, Cllr Chris Stanbra, has today slammed the Conservatives budget proposals.
Cllr Stanbra said “The proposals today are more of the same from the Conservatives – more cuts to front line services, hitting the most vulnerable hardest. A slick marketing campaign can not hide the huge cuts to social care and preventative services such as provision for the elderly, disabled, those with mental health problems, and children. Neither can it hide the fact that libraries are still at risk.”
“At the same time as these massive cuts to front line services, the Conservatives still waste £2m on their Quango with an office in Brussels and are spending over £4m on a “Business Intelligence” team.”
“To make matters worse this is a crisis of the Conservatives own making. They failed to fix the roof while the sun was shining. They kept Council Tax artificially low, without reforming the back office services necessary to protect front line services. Now there are no reserves to fall back on. PFI costs are rocketing, an extra £4m pressure is identified – even the streetlight PFI deal agreed only a few months ago is now going to cost £1m over the next four years. When local people look at this package of cuts to frontline services hitting the most vulnerable hardest they will say ‘no deal’”
