Northamptonshire Liberal Democrats have repeated their concerns about the street light switch off in Northamptonshire after insurers Aviva have released data showing that there was a 53% rise in burglaries in Northamptonshire when clocks went back last year.
Cllr Glynane said “The warning issued by Aviva is particularly worrying this year due to the Conservative street light switch off. Last year Northamptonshire was the second worst area in the country in terms of increases in burglary when the clocks went back. Aviva have clearly stated that the darker nights bring more crime. Due to the Conservatives decision to switch off half our lights, the darker nights are even darker this year.”
“Why should residents be plunged into darkness and the fear of crime? Is there now going to be a double whammy of increased insurance premiums as well? Switching off our lights is quite simply the wrong course of action. The Conservatives need to listen to local people and turn them back on.”
