Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Northampton Borough Council, Cllr Sally Beardsworth is demanding action from the Conservative administration after figures showed that the Council’s performance was nose-diving under the Conservatives, and financial information was not being published at all.
Cllr Beardsworth said “You do have to wonder why the Conservatives aren’t publishing financial information. What are they hiding? It’s incredibly important that Councillors and the public are able to keep a grip on whether the Council is actually doing the basic job of delivering services properly. Last time the Conservatives ran the Council they left it as the “World’s Worst Council”. It they do not keep a tight grip, and publishing this kind of data is one of the main ways to do that, Northampton will be back at the bottom of the pile.”
“Under the Lib Dems the Council was one of the most improving Councils in the country and performance and finance figures were published regularly. Alarmingly the only figures that have been published have shown that 50% of the indicators are not being achieved – a shocking failure. On top of that the Conservatives are not publishing anything at all to do with the new Leisure trust or Environmental Services. Given the mess they made introducing the new rubbish and recycling collections perhaps they don’t want the public to know what’s happening?”
“Remember this is about the Conservatives providing basic services to the public. It seems that they are too busy squabbling amongst themselves and running their PR machine to actually run the Council properly. The Conservatives need to get a grip and publish these figures regularly. I will be asking why they have not done this, and demanding action at the next meeting of the Borough Council.”
