Cllr Richard Church, the Liberal Democrat Shadow Cabinet Member for Regeneration at County Hall, is calling for Northamptonshire Conservatives to drop their opposition to South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership (SEMLEP) in the wake of SEMLEP’s successful Enterprise Zone bid. The new zone is expected to create around 17,000 jobs.
Cllr Church welcomed the news today and said “This is great news for Northampton. New jobs will be created for local people and drive Northamptonshire forwards. I congratulate South East Midlands Partnership (SEMLEP) on their successful bid.”
“Lest we forget the Liberal Democrats were instrumental in setting up SEMLEP when we ran the Borough Council, in the teeth of sustained opposition from the Conservative County Council. The Conservative Leader was so opposed that he tried to set up his own £2m Quango.”
“The Conservatives’ Northamptonshire Economic Partnership has a budget costing hard pressed Northamptonshire tax- payers £2m a year, and the only jobs created so far are associated with their office in Brussels. Meanwhile SEMLEP cost Northampton taxpayers a few thousand, and is expected to create 17,000 jobs. I know which is a better deal for local people. I suspect the Conservatives do too. That’s why I’m calling on the Conservative Leader to join the winning team and back SEMLEP.”
