“Conservative motion on PCSO cuts a cynical ploy” Cllr Brendan Glynane

Posted By: Northamptonshire Lib Dems January 3rd, 2012

Cllr Brendan Glynane, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Delapre & Briar Hill and a member of Northamptonshire Police Authority, has slammed Northampton Conservatives‘ attempts to deflect criticism of PCSO cuts onto the police by putting a motion to Northampton Borough Council.

“This is a shameful ploy from Northampton Conservatives. It is particularly unfair given that the Police are restricted in what they can say publicly about political issues. They are attacking the police, knowing that they can’t respond, which is disgraceful.”

“The truth of the matter is that the Conservatives are cutting their funding at Northampton Borough Council (£100,000) and at Northamptonshire County Council (£500,000). This is a decision by the Conservatives, and no amount of spin and half-truths will change that. They should be up front and honest with people and not try to deflect the blame for their decisions.”

“On top of the PCSO cuts, the Conservatives have already plunged Northamptonshire into darkness with their street light switch-off, raising the fear of crime. They also cut the funding for speed cameras last year, making our roads more dangerous. Northamptonshire Conservatives are making our town and our county less safe, and then have the gall to try to blame the police! Frankly the police and the public deserve better.”

Perhaps the question needs to be asked why it is that the Police precept for Northamptonshire is far far higher than it is for adjoining Cambridgeshire or Thames Valley.
    (average Band D rate comparison)

Is this reflected in or justified by higher crime statistics?
Or manifest in higher rates of detection of culprits?
Or better rates of conviction of culprits?

I'm sure that you can do your own research to verify whether or not Northamptonshire Police are giving good value for money in comparison to other Police forces.

Are PCSO's the fat that needs to be trimmed?
    I think not.
More likely that Northants Police needs to learn some vital lessons in financial management.
