“Conservative expenses defence doesn’t add up”

Cllr Glynane Cllr Brendan Glynane, Leader of the Opposition Liberal Democrat group at County Hall has responded to the Conservatives defence of their £59,439 expenses claims.

Cllr Glynane said “The Conservative leader’s defence of his group’s ludicrous and disgraceful travel expense claims simply doesn’t stack up. He claims they need it to do the job. But if that’s the case then why are two of his Cabinet members (one of them particularly well travelled, the other representing a division a long way from County Hall) only claiming £53 between them? Why do those Cabinet members need to claim so little, whilst the other 8 claim £27,759 between them?”

“Our Deputy Leader, Cllr Stanbra, lives in Corby and represents Danesholme division. He didn’t claim any travel expenses in the last year at all, despite the fact he comes into County Hall several times a week.”

“Now the Conservative Leader claims to want a review of Councillors allowances. But last year the independent panel had it’s recommendations rejected by the Conservative dominated Council. Why? Could it be because it cut the level of allowances paid to top councillors such as the Conservative Leader and his Cabinet?”

“Perhaps the Conservatives should try using the local buses instead of taxis to get to meetings. You never know, it might make them rethink their plans to cut millions of pounds from our bus services as well!”
